Latest News From Month

Mens Pairs 4BBB Stableford

Order of Merit leader teamed up with Joe Larkey to win the 4BBB Stableford which was played on Saturday 1st August. Joe has been in solid form this year shooting around his handicap in most of the competitions, while Steve has been shooting under his handicap in most of the competitions, with the odd bad round of level to his handicap. Steve and Joe got 45 points. Adam Fletcher-Warrington and Ed Eley were second with 44 points. Adam played some fantastic golf, coming back in 2 over par playing off his 19 handicap. Darren Read and Mark Allen beat Scott Merrell and Paul Hancock on count-back to claim third place. Both pairs got 43 points. Rich Bonser and Briony Allen were next on 41 points.

Presidents Day

Ben Hall won the Presidents Putter for the best Nett score on Presidents Day. Ben shot a Gross 71 Nett 66 to win the competition by two shots ahead of winter league winning partner Ed Eley. With Ben winning the main prize of the day, Ed won the best Gross of the day with his 72, even though he was a shot worse. A player cannot win two prizes. There were some other good scores from the low handicappers. To see the full write-ups and results for Presidents Day you can access the page by going through Results-Mens-Presidents day or Results-Juniors-Pres Day.

The Family Cup

Werner and Tom Brach got 47 points on Saturday 8th August to win The Family Cup. The father and son combination won the competition by 1 shot ahead of Club Captain Stuart Robinson and S Edwards who got 46. Tim and Jordan Rushin were third with 45 points, beating Dave Sawbridge and Rich Holt on count-back. There were two more scores of 44 before the rest of the field.

Mens Scratch Team

The Scratch Team made two changes to the side that beat Forest Hills two weeks agao, with Lee Tebbutt returning in place of Dale Baker and Jan Reading coming in for the unavailable Nigel Oldman. Unfortunately the team could not repeat the same form they had against Forest Hills, and in the end they lost 6 1/2 - 1 1/2. It was a disapointing result for the team as a win would have seen them promoted and a halfwould have seen them in a very good position going into the final match. The team still have a chance of promotion. They must win at home to Charnwood on Thursday 27th August and hope results go their way. Please come and support the team, all support is greatly appreciated. John Briers was the only man to win, with Ed Eley getting the half to ensure that he remains undefeated for the season. See the Scratch Team Section for a more detailed report.

Junior Wilfred Davis

Adam Fletcher-Warrington won the Junior Wilfred Davis Trophy by 26 shots, beating brother Oli. The Wilfred Davis is a 4 round competition, and Adams Gross scores of 83, 85, 86, 76 off his 19 handicap gave him Nett scores of 64, 66, 67 and a ridiculous 57 to finish. Oli beat Adam Gross over the 4 rounds with Gross scores of 79, 85, 79 and 77, giving him Nett scores of 69, 75, 69 and 67. Adam had a Nett score of 254 ofr the four rounds, while Oli had a combined score of 280. Danny Keogh was in third place with a 4 round Nett score of 282. For the competition, Adams handicap stayed at 19 for all four rounds, although in terms of handicap cutting purposes it would be adjusted at the end of each round. Adam lost 5 shots during the tournament, getting himself cut to 14. Oli's final round Nett 67 has also got him cut, getting to cut to single figures for the first time, now playing off 9. It is a fantastic competition to play in and it really tests the consistenty of the golfers playing, with the first 36 holes played on Tuesday 11th August and the next 36 played on Thursday 13th August. It was a fantastic performance by Adam over the course of the four rounds, and a fantastic win. Well done Adam!

MENS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

The mens Club Championship was held on Sunday 16th August, and a new champion was crowned this year, with John Briers the man taking the title. John ended up winning the competition by 5 shots ahead of Tidge Gharial, after round of 74, 75 game him a total of 149. Tidge shot 77, 77 to finish with 154. John played very solid golf over both rounds, and with the condition of the course scoring was not easy. The greens were firm and the fairways long, so solid ball striking was the key to making a good score. John struck the ball well pretty much throughout the day, and managed to get the putter going well. A more detailed report of the day can be found in the Results-Mens section, then by clicking on the Club Championship link which will take you to a new page.

Ladies Bronze Challenge Cup

Margaret Palmer won the ladies Bronze Challenge Cup which was played on Sunday 16th August. Margaret shot a Gross 95 Nett 69 off her 26 handicap despite a disapointing score on the last hole. Margaret was cut as a result of this score, and her new handicap is 25.1, giving her a playing handicap of 25. Ladies Captain Shirley Bright was second and Ann Clayton was third on a day where the ladies struggled due to a lack of run on the long fairways. The ball was not running very far for anybody, and with the wind up it made scoring even more difficult.

Mens Rimington Shield

This year was the first year that the Rimington Shield was held over two days, and some of the Saturday players really took advantage of this in tough conditions. The course was not in great condition which made scoring difficult, and Daz Read ended up winning the competition with 38 points. Daz won the comp by 2 shots ahead of Rich Bonser, winning his first gold letter in the process. Daz has now been cut to 19 as a result of this competition win. N Montaut was third after also getting 36 points, and 4th place also got 36 points. Scott Merrell was 4th, and he picks up vital Order of Merit points in his quest to win the second Order of Merit. There were two scores of 35, six scores of 34 and eight scors of 33, showing just how tough the course was playing. The wind over the weekend did not help.

Mens Popejoy Salver

As with the Rimington it was the first year of the Popejoy being played over two days, but the turnout for the Popejoy was not as great as for the Rimington. The Popejoy is open to players of handicaps 21+, while the Rimington is for handicaps 9-20. In the end Brian Haines won the Popejoy with a solid 37 points in the tough conditions. Brian beat Tony Greaves by a shot, while Nick McCaffrey was third on 31 points, beating Alan Simpson on count-back.

Oder Of Merit News

The latest Order of Merit standings have now been added to the website, and they are up-to-date as of 18th August, so the standings contain the Club Championship, Popejoy Salver and Rimington Shield. As of the latest standings Steve Ablett is still sitting on the top of the table, with 489.25 points. Last years winner Ed Eley is nearest to Steve in second place, and Ed has 411.67 points. The next three places in the list are Paul Hancock (395.65), Scott Merrell (385.00) and Andy Vale (292.92.) There are still a few competitions left although the competitions that remain are not high scoring competitions, so Steve remains favourite to take the trophy. Ed, Paul and Scott all still have chances, but the players outside the top 4 will struggle due to the fact that the competitions left are low point scoring competitions. Even though that is the case anybody in the top 10 could make a late charge, and all it would take would be a few competition wins with the top 3 having a few bad rounds, and all a sudden any of the top 10 could be in contention to win the Order of Merit. The Anniversary Trophy is a high points scoring competition, so that day could be crucical for the Order of Merit. It is certainly shaping up to be an interesting finish to the 2009 Order of Merit. TPutter for the best Nett20are made up as follows: Tim Bingham (262.25), Ben Hall (236.40), Jan Reading (231.83), Adam Jacques (222.50) and Mick Geddes (196.00.) The result table will noe hopefully be updated on a more regular basis coming towards the end of the season, so people can see what they need to do to push for the trophy.

Mens McDonald Trophy

On the weekend of Sat 22nd and Sun 23rd August the McDonald Trophy was played, and it was a weekend where scoring conditions were not easy. The fairways were quite long, the greens rock hard and the wind blowing a gale. Scoring was not going to be low, with a Sub Nett 70 probably going to be good enough. In the end that proved to be correct, with Roger Loach shooting a fantastic Gross 78 Nett 68 off his 10 handicap. Roger is a very solid golfer, and he is very rarely many over his handicap. His game is helped by his distance and accuracy off the tee, which is exactly what was required in those conditions. Rogers terrific knock will earn him his name on the honours board once again, while he has also been cut back down to 9, with an exact handicap of 8.9. Well done Roger! Roger beat John Ball into first place, after John shot a Gross 93 off his 23 handicap to give him a Nett 70, beating Order of Merit Challenger Scott Merrell on count-back. Scott shot a Gross 81. Other than Roger, Ben Hall was the only man to break 80 that weekend, shooting a solid 76 Nett 71 to finish 4th and finish with the best Gross for the competition. Ben had a triple bogey 7 down the 7th, and then birdied 3 out of the last 6 holes, including the 12th to come back in 34 to earn him valuable Order of Merit Points, as did Scott Merrell. Darren Peden was 5th, beating Shane Kenney on count-back after both players Shot Gross 81s off their 9 handicaps.

Order Of Merit News

As stated in the previous Order Of Merit write-up below, the Order Of Merit Results will be updated more often from now on until the end of the season. There will not always be write-ups, expect when players near the top get points and move up and others move down. Keep checking the link on the Home Page and in the Results Sections to see if the standings have been updated. As a result of the McDonald Trophy two players have moved up in the rankings, also meaning two players have moved down. After his third place finish Scott Merrell has overtaken Ed Eley and Paul Hancock into second place,, and he is now only 29.25 points behind leader Steve Ablett. Ben Hall finished 4th in the McDonald, and therefore jumped into 6th place, overtaking Tim Bingham. Ben is so close to Andy Vale in 5th, sitting a tiny 1.52 points behind him. Roger Loach has jumped into 11th place from 31st place after his win in the McDonald Trophy.

Junior August Medal

Jake Hurst regained some of his form to win the Junior August Medal by a shot in tough conditions on Sunday 23rd August. Jake shot Gross 78 Nett 67 off his 11 handicap to beat Jake Ellson by a shot. Jake Ellson shot a Gross 88 Nett 68 of his 20 handicap to get himself cut down to 19. Jake Hurst has been cut to 10.5, so is now very cloe to 10. Junior Captain Craig Seal was third with a Nett 71 playing off 84, while Ian Timmins finished 4th with a Nett 72 off 25.

Information Regarding Future 2 Day Competitions

From now on any competition that is played over two days will have three results sheets added to the website. One will be for the Saturday players, one for the Sunday players and then a combined sheet showing all of the players. This is due to the fact thatdifferent scores on different days can produce two different 'Competition Standard of Scratch.' The combined will be for the competition overall, so if you are top of the Saturday or Sunday, you might not have won the comeptition. Please check the combined result sheet. This depends on website page space.

Pairs Summer 9 Hole Matchplay League

The closing date for the league matches of the Pairs Summer KO League has now passed, and after the league it was Dale Baker and Craig Seal who won the league. The top 4 teams go into the semi-finals, and with the semis completely drawn it does not matter where you finish in the league. Ben Hall and Briony Allen were second, with Ed Eley and Jan Reading 3rd and Adam and Brian Fletcher-Warrington 4th. Although nobody played all their matches and some teams didnt play, everybody who did play enojyed the league, and everybody said it was good fun playing the matches. This year has been a bit of a push with everything not being finalised until later April. For next year people will be able to enter a lot sooner, meaning people have more time to play matches. It would be great to see some new faces enter the league next year, so that different sections of the club can get involved with other sections, and that people who play toghether a lot can have a chance playing against other people. The semi-final draw sees Dale Baker & Craig Seal take on Ed Eley & Jan Reading, while Ben Hall & Briony Allen take on Adam & Brian Fletcher-Warrington. The deadline for the semi-finals is 13th September, with the final having to be played by 30th September. The final league table and KO Draw can be found uner the Results-Pairs Summer League Page.

Mens Scratch Team

The Scratch Team knew what they needed to do going into their last match, win and hope Lutterworth lose to Harborough. Market Harborough did us a favour by beating Lutterworth, but Oadby could only manage a 4-4 draw at home to Charnwood, so the team once again missed out on promotion. If Harborough had beaten Lutterworth 6-2 the team would have still gone up, but with the score 4 1/2 - 3 1/2 it was good enough for Lutterworth to finish higher than Oadby. Depending on the Ullesthorpe result they could still get promoted. Richard Primrose came in to replace Lee Tebbutt, which was the only change for Oadby. The four winners for Oadby were Ed Eley, Dave Goodman, Tidge Gharial and Adam Jacques, while Ben Hall, John Briers, Jan Reading and Richard Primrose lost. It was a disapointing way to finish the season. A more detailed match report can be found in the Scratch Team-Match Reports Section.
