Coming Up In This Month
Mens Winter League
The group stages of the winter league will be concluded by the end of this month, with possibly the semi-finals and maybe even final being played during February. This is all due to weather, as if the course is closed or the weather is that bad some of the matches will once again have to be called off.
General
The captains drive in also takes place this month, with the date set for Sunday 8th February. There is also due to be a 9 hole competition on this day, but that will depend on whether or not the course is open, due to the course being very wet and snow being forecast.
Mixed
There is a mixed friendly toward the end of the month which is to be played by Oadby members only. It is simply a friendly match within the club. This will take place on Sunday 22nd February.
Mail On Sunday Team
The Mail On Sunday is a competition that is played by golf clubs all over the countries, will the draw being made trying to place teams as close together as possible for the earlier rounds. The first round sees Oadby travel to Glen Gorse, you cant really get much closer than that. The format is 5 players go out to play singles matchplay, with shots, and at the end whoever has the most points wins. If there is a playoff at 2.5-2.5 it is down to the playes who went out in the 5th position to have a sudden death playoff. The team for the first round is; Tidge Gharial (Captain), Lee Tebbutt, Ed Eley, Ben Hall & Dave Goodman. The match takes place on Saturday 21st February with the first tee time at 11.30. Feel free to go along and support the team in what should be a good quality match.
Latest News From Month
Mens Winter League
The winter league was called off on Saturday 7th February due to snowy conditions. These final group matches will now be played on Saturday 14th February, providing the snow has cleared by then. The Sunday matches will conclude on Sunday 15th February, once again though providing the snow has cleared.
General
Captains drive in went ahead on Sunday 8th February, but unfortunately due to snow on the ground the 9 hole competition that was due to run was cancelled. The club captain, ladies captain, senior captain, junior captain, 2nd team captain and scratch team captain all hit tee shots after Vice-Captain John Goodman had shovelled an area of snow from the tee. All captains hit respectable tee shots, with the two best being a wonderful drive from junior captain Craig Seal, and a drive that was perfectly down the middle of the fairway by new club captain Stuart Robinson.
Mens Winter League
The winter league was once again called off for the weekend of the 14th and 15th February due to the course still being closed. The final matches will now hopefully be played on the 28th of the February and the 1st March. These matches will conclude the gorup stages with the semi-finals and final then being played. The Saturday group could lead to a playoff having to be played but there will definately not be a playoff in the Sunday group.
Mail On Sunday Team
The 5 man team tok on Glen Gorse Golf Club on Saturday 21st February and the team unfortunately lost 4-1, with Dave Goodman being the only vistor out of the team. The team will all be very disapointed with the result but they did come up against a strong Glen Gorse side who fielded a strong team, all who seemed to play well. The support was greatly appreciated and we thank Su Goodman, vice-captain John Goodman and club captain Stuart Robinson who all turned out to support the team at Glen Gorse.
Saturday Winter League Final Match
The Saturday Winter League concluded on Saturday 28th February, with the battle for second place going right down to the 18th hole. Andrew Wells and Mohammed Asra had secured the group winners spot with their win over Dave Leet & Dave Forrester, but the battle for second place was anything but comfortable. Unaware that Mark Allen and Daz Read had failed to win against the always battling Mick Geddes who was on his own, Tidge Gharial & Rich Bonser and Kevin Wood & Andy Vale stood on the 18th tee all square, with Vale and Wood unaware that a half would be good enough to take them through, both teams were playing to win. All four players kept their tee shots in play, with Wood then first to play who hit the green, followed by Bonser who also hit the green, further away from the hole than Wood. Andy Vale then put his ball inside that of Bonser, in a similar position on the green. Gharial then had a pitch from about 60-70yards which came up short of the hole but on the green, just outside the distance of Wood's shot. Bonser then two putted for par followed by Vale who did the same. Gharial has one last chance to put the defending champions in the semi-finals but his putt just crept away. That meant Vale & Wood were through, although they did not know this at this point, so just to be on the safe side Wood rolled in his birdie putt to make sure of progression to the next round.
Sunday Winter League Final Match
The final match in the Sunday Winter League saw Jan Reading & Adam Jacques beat Ed Eley & Ben Hall 2UP, to secure the group winners spot. Both teams were already through but the win ensures Reading & Jacques went through as group winners.
