Latest News From Month

Captains Away Day

The closing date for the Captains Away Day is coming soon, with the closing date set at Sunday 12th July 2009. Anybody wishing to play in the Captains Away Day must have paid in full by Sunday 12th. The cost of the day is £31 which includes golf, prizes and meals. The away day is to be played at Rutland Water Golf Club (I think, to be confirmed) which is a very nice golf course. The date for the away day is Friday 24th July 2009. The away day is always a good day out with a number of people going along to play. If anybody wishes to enter who has not yet entered they should put their name on the sheet in the clubhouse and pay their money to one of the Captains or the secretary by Sunday 12th July.

Scratch Team

The scratch team lost their second match of the season on Thursday 2nd July when they very narrowly lost to Market Harborough away. The course was in fantastic condition and the weather was perfect. There were two changes to the team that lost to Charnwood Forest two weeks before, with Dale Baker and James Whitehead being replaced by John Briers and the returning Adam Jacques. The final score was 4 1/2 - 3 1/2 to Market Harborough, with John Briers, Nigel Oldman and Dave Goodman winning while Ben Hall, Tidge Gharial, Lee Tebbutt and Adam Jacques losing. Ed Eley was the man who got the half. The team have 3 more away matches, with the next against Ullethorpe who have already picked up 1 1/2 points away from home, so the team need at least a point in those 3 matches to have a chance of promotion, providing they also win their last game of the season at home to Charnwood Forest. See the match reports page in the Scratch team section for a more detailed match report.

Junior July Medal

Jake Hurst shot Gorss 80 Nett 67 playing off 13 to win another junior competition, this time the July Medal. Jake has now been cut o 12.5, getting extremely close to 12. Dale Baker was second with a Nett 70, which was a Gross 78 to give him the lowest gross of the day. Dale beat Lee Prendergast on count-back, while Sam Buckley was 4th with a Nett 71.

Pat Murphy KO News

The final for the Pat Murphy KO is now set, with James Whitehead due to take on Mohammed Asra. Asra beat Steve Abblett in the semi-final, while James Whitehead got a bye in the semi-final after Tidge Gharial and Mark Allen had not played their match by the closing date. It will be a very close final, with both players in good form, and James only having to give a few shots to Asra. It is a tough competition for the lower handicappers to win, due to the fact that there is nearly always one bandit who gets a good run in the KO without getting cut. The final should be balanced, with both players being better than their handicaps. The date of the final is to be arranged.

Mens Bambrick Trophy

Ray Clark won the Bambrick Trophy after shooting a very impressive 48 points on Sunday 5th July. There were a lot of good scores in the competition, but Ray came out top of the class. Ray has been threatning for a few weeks now to win a compeition, as he keeps shooting a couple under his handicap with some holes containing big scores. Everything came together for Ray on Sunday and he has deserved a competition win, although with 48 points he has also deserved being cut from 25 to 21, with the handicap committee also watching to possibly cut further. Well done Ray. Tim Bingham was second with an also impressive 43 points, and Tim has also been cut a shot down to 16. Paul Hancock was once again under his handicap, and he finished third with 41 points on count-back, beating Alan Hutchby. Alan Simpson got 40, and Order of Merit leader Steve Abblett was 6th with 39 points, extending his lead at the top of the rankings with some of the other top 5 not playing. Hopefully the scores are not this good for the handicap trophy, as if they are the lower handicappers will really struggle to get near the top 5.

Mens County Foursomes

The mens county foursomes team missed out on a second consecutive semi-final after they lost at home to Longcliffe on the 3rd extra hole. If a match is all-square both pairs play a 3 hole playoff, and unfortunately Oadby lost 1 Down after those 3 holes. Ed Eley and Dave Goodman had earlier won 1 UP, while Ben Hall and Tidge Gharial had lost 1 Down to take the team into a playoff. There is a more detailed match report in the team section, which can be found in Teams-Other OGC Teams-Mens County Foursomes Team.

Mens Handicap Trophy

For full results and write-ups of the Handicap Trophy go into Results-Mens and click Handicap Trophy to take you to a new page.

Junior Handicap Trophy

Jake Hurst won the Junior Handicap Trophy on count-back, beating Oliver Fletcher-Warrington to the trophy. Both players shot Nett 66's on a day when scores were very low for all of the juniors, although Oli was 2 shots better Gross, his 77 beating Jake's 79. Jake has been cut from 13 to 12, while Oli has been cut from 12 to 11, continuing his good form for the year. Andrew Keogh, David Reed and Craig Seal were 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively on Nett 69's, with Craig losing a shot from 13 to 12. Dale Baker, Ian Timmins and Jake Ellson completed the line-up. The top 8 players from the handicap trophy go into the Junior Matchplay Cup, which is another gold letter. There were only 8 in the competition, so all 8 players go into the Matchplay Cup, where matches can be played whenever the players want to.

Seniors July Stableford

I would firstly like to apologise for not knowing the Christian name of Mr Robinson, but he won the Seniors July Stableford by two shots after shooting 42 points on 14th July. Club vice captain John Goodman was second with 40 points, while there were a number of players on 39 and 38 points. Mr Robinson was cut from 28 to 27 as a result of his 42 points.

Mens Scratch Team

The Scratch Team once again had to make changes to their side, with Tidge Gharial and Ben Hall both on holiday, Dale Baker and James Whitehead came back into the side. Other than that the team was the same. With the captain not playing Ed Eley took over the job, and with Ullesthorpe in good form it was a very important match. Ullesthorpe had already picked up 1 and a half points away from hoome, so they were in the strongest position in the league. A win would have been fantastic, but the half that the team got was just as good. Eley's tactical order clearly worked, and a half was a fantastic result. Oadby now have half a point away from home, while Ullesthorpe now have just one when you look at they have dropped half at home. A full match report can be found in the match reports section under the Scratch Team page, and Ed has wrote this report with Ben not there.

Mens Ford Trophy

Adam Jacques shot a very good Gross 69 Nett 65 to win the Ford Trophy, which was played on Saturday 18th July. It was a great performance from Adam, who has now been cut to 3.6 as a result of this -3 par round. Adam is only the second person to break par this year, after Ed Eley who has done it twice, also shooting a 69 which is now the joint lowest round of the year between Eley and Jacques. With the form these two guys are in there is a chance one of them might go lower, with the course record of 68 possibly under threat. Scott Merrell continued his good form to shoot Gross 76 Nett 66 to finish second. Scott has now been cut to 11. Another player who has been in fantastic form so far this year is Steve Ablett, and he finished third with a Nett 68, getting cut to 14. Mohammed Asra was cut to 13 after his Gross 84 Nett 70 was good enough for 4th. There were 5 people who shot 73, including Ed Eley who has now gone back up to 4, making Lee Tebbutt the lowest handicapper in the club once again on 3.

Junior July Stableford

There is no doubt who has been the in-form junior this year, with Jake Hurst winning yet again in the Junior July Stableford, although he did win the competition on a 4 way count-back. All 4 juniors got 41 points, and all 4 of them got cut a shot as a result of it. Jake has been cut to 11, and Adam Fletcher-Warrington was second out of the 4, getting cut from 21 to 20 in the process. David Rees also got cut from 21 to 20, and he finished 4th. In 3rd place was Ian Timmins, who got himself cut from 26 to 25 along the way. Oliver Fletcher-Warrington was 5th with 39 points, getting himself another 0.2 chopped off his handicap, to take him to 9.8 for the first time.

Mens Captains Charity Stableford

Shane Kenney got 43 points playing off 10 in the Captains Charity Stableford on Sunday 19th July. Shane has now been cut to 9, and it was a great knock by Shane, shooting 3 over par gross. Shane won the competition by 1 point, beating Rob May who finished with 42. Rob was also cut, from 12 to 11. Paul Hancock is nearly always up there in the top 5, and he finished third this time around with 40 points. It is only a matter of time before Paul has a really low score and wins a big competition, getting himself cut a lot in the process. Paul is still coming down slowly, and he is now down to 19.5, with a playing handicap of 20. Mick Geddes and Joe Larkey both got 38 points to come 4th and 5th respectively, and Steve Ablett was 6th with 37 points. A lot of good scores, and as mentioned, the location of the vouchers has not yet been confirmed, but it will be.

Mens Scratch Team

The Scratch Team welcomed back Captain Tidge Gharial and Ben Hall on Thursday 30th July, with James Whitehead dropping out and Lee Tebbutt unavailable. It was very close to the strongest side Oadby could field, with Lee the onlu exception. The half in the last game had put Oadby in an average position looking for promotion, but something was needed here. It was not going to be easy as nobody had played the course in its new layout. The team ended up with a 5-3 victory, with Dale Baker and Tidge Gharial losing. John Briers and Ed Eley halved and everybody else won. It was a massive win for the team who have now put themselves in a good position. See the Scratch Team Section for a more detailed report
