Racing

The first of four race dates for June is Tuesday 1st, with the next being Saturday 12th. Thursday 17th is the third while the last race day of the month is Thursday 24th.

Menphys Charity Shield

Ed Eley shot a Gross 69 Nett 66 on Saturday 5th June to win the Menphys Charity Shield. Ed has started to hit some good form recently and this most recent win takes him down to a handicap of 2.7 which makes him the lowest handicapper in the club. Ed’s 66 was good enough to win the competition on count-back, ahead of Asra who shot a Gross 80 for his 66 and has now been cut down to 12.5 with a playing handicap of 13 as a result. Andy Vale was third with a very solid Nett 68 after a Gross 80, and Andy is now down to 11 after another very solid round. Geoff Ferrar, Brian Orgill and Raj Pattini were fouth, fifth and sixth respectively after all shooting Nett 70, with Raj having been cut down to 14. Joe Larkey was seventh with a Nett 71 and as result of stableford adjusted handicap Joe was cut a shot as a result of this knock, being cut down to 20. Steve Buckley was the only other player in the field to shoot level to their handicap after a Gross 89.

Homes Menphys Charity Shield

Dave Sawbridge continued his good recent form with a win in the Homes Menphys Charity Shield. Dave shot a Gross 83 off his 15 handicap to give him a Nett 68 and the trophy. Dave has now been cut down to 13 as a result of this and it shows that all that practice playing in the winter league has done him all sorts of good. Conditions on the day were tough which is shown by Dave’s five shot victory margain, with Neil Whittenbury in second place after a Gross 86 Nett 73, beating Adam Jacques (Gross 77) and Tony Connor (Gross 93) on count-back. Richard Primrose, Barry Swift and Anthony Hutchby all shot Nett 74’s for fifth, sixth and seventh respectively, while Jan Reading was next with a Nett 75 followed by Joe Larkey with a Nett 76.

Scratch Team

The Scratch Team won their second consecutive match on Thursday 10th June when they beat Market Harborough at home. The team was reduced in strength as Tidge Gharial, Lee Tebbutt and Geoff Ferrer were all unavailable, meaning John Briers, Jan Reading and James Whitehead came in for the match. It also meant that Ed Eley was left in charge of the team and Ed did a good job as captain, taking the team to their second consecutive 6 ½ - 1 ½ home win. Ed halved his match thanks to a birdie on the last and John Briers lost, meaning Ben Hall, Adam Jacques, Dave Goodman, Dave Sewart, Jan Reading and James Whitehead all won. It was a great result for the team who have bounced back very well after the 6 ½ - 1 ½ loss away to Ullesthorpe on the first day of the season. Captains Day

The results and write-ups for Captains Day have now been added to the website. They are all on a separate Captains Day page, which can be access either via the Home Page or the Results-Mens page.

Fullers London Pride

The Fullers London Pride was played over the weekend of Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th June, and Ben Hall secured his second win in 2 weeks with a Gross 71 Nett 66 to win the competition by a shot. In doing so Ben has been cut down to 4 for the first time and he also takes home the £48 voucher. Ben would have risen to the top of the Order of Merit had it not been Ed Eley who finished second. Ed shot a Gross 70 Nett 67 to earn a £30 voucher and get cut to 2 for the first time. Ed has kept his lead at the top of the Order of Merit although the gap is less than 10 points. Dave Forrester continued his good form to finish third with a Gross 88 Nett 70 off his 18 handicap, which sees him win a £17 voucher and also get cut down to 17. Ron Allen was fourth with a Gross 89 Nett 71, while there were Nett 72's for Richard Holt and Paul Littlewood. Joe Larkey, Steve Monksfield, Roger Loach and Derek Archer all shot Nett 73's.

Scratch Team

The Scratch Team had their 5th game of the season on Thursday 24th June away to Melton Mowbray. The team were confident going into the match especially with Tidge Gharial, Lee Tebbutt and Geoff Ferrar returning to the side, although the team did not quite put in the performance they were hoping for and ended up losing the match 6 1/2 - 1 1/2. There was a win for Ed Eley and a halve for James Whitehead, who was 3 Down with 3 to play, but unfortunately the rest of the team put in below par performances and lost their matches. The end result was very disapointing for the team who will be looking to bounce back in two weeks time at home to Ullesthorpe. Captains 5 Clubs & A Putter Challenge

The Captains Charity Stableford at the end of June was a competition with a difference, as the Captain decided to make it a 5 clubs & a putter challenge. It was a good idea and I would think all who played in the comp enjoyed the difference of not having a full set of clubs to choose from. The competition was over 2 days and Colin Hacworth came out on top over the two days, picking up a £28 voucher for his 38 points. It is Colin's first competition win since joining the club and it will be a massive confidence boost for Colin. Well done Colin! Colin beat Tim Bingham on count-back, with Tim picking up a £17 voucher for his second place finish. Geoff Kiff beat Brian Haines on count-back into third place on 37 points to pick up an £11 voucher, while Rob Lovell, Nick McAffrey and Ray Clark all finished the competition with 36 points.
