Oadby Golf Club, Leicester Road, Oadby, Leicester, LE2 4AJ
The Ladies County Foursomes team is played by all all the clubs within the county. All the clubs are thrown into a hat and the draw is then completed. Each club picks four players to represent them, and the four players then split into two pairs. Each pair then play foursomes against the pairs from the other clubs. Each of the two matches are played to the end of the final hole. Even if a pair is 5 UP with 4 to play, the match carries on being played until the end. At the end of both the matches, the winning team is the team with the larger victory. this means if team A wins 6 UP in one match and lose 4 DN in the other, they go through to the next round via a 2 UP victory. If the final score is all square, both pairs play a sudden-death. The sudden-death consists of 3 hole each pair, and then once again the scores are added up. If the scores are still the same the next 3 holes are played, and so on. The matches are not played of Scratch, there are shots given which are given out by halving the combined handicap difference. If team A play of 2 and 5, and team B play off 4 and 7, team B would get 2 shots. The matches are to be played on set days as stated by the Leicestershire & Rutland Ladies Golf Union.
The Ladies had their first round of the County Foursomes on Monday 17th May, and despite being handed a very tricky draw to Kibworth away the Ladies put in a fantastic effort, despite finishing just short. The first pair our were Briony Allen and Bev Doods who unfortunately found themselves 4 Down after 9, but a fantastic fight back on the back 9 meant they only lost their match 1 Down. It was a terrific fight back from the Ladies which showed great character. Cathy Smith and Kerry Coulter were the second pairing and they moved to 2 UP after 11, although with no shots left and some long holes to come it was always going to be tough against 2 big hitters. Cathy and Kerry also played some very solid golf on the back 9 and they stood on the 18th tee all square. Cathy played a great shot from 160 yards to the side of the green before Kerry played a magical chip to 4 feet. The Kibworth team were 12 feet away in 3 but a bad first put meant ther were only just inside Oadby. When Cathy rolled in the par put it meant Kibworth had a 3 and a half foot putt to win the match, which if missed would mean extra holes. Kibworth holed to put to halve the match and win the match 1 UP altogether. The Ladies can be very proud of the performance they put in as it was always going to be a tough game away from home to Kibworth.
