Coming Up In This Month

Pat Murphy KO News

The first round has now been completed, and the second round has commenced. Out of some of the bigger matches in the first round defending champion Rich Bonser beat Neil Measey, and he goes on to face Dave Sewart in round 2. Dave came through what could have been a tough game, although his opponent did not play very well. He beat Darren Peden. Lee 'lucky' Tebbutt was given his match after his opponent picked up an injury. Dave Leet beat Ben Hall on the 17th in a match that contained some very poor golf. Neither really deserved to win. Werner Brach beat Kev Wood in another close encounter, while scratch team captain Tidge Gharial beat Scott Merrell. Club Secretary Richard Primrose also came through a touch match as he beat Paul Littlewood. Tim Bingham also won his first round match. He beat Gordon Action to set up a second round match against Dave Leet. Mark Allen came back from behind to beat Neil Whittenbury, and Paul Hancock overcame a tough challenge against Mick Geddes. Jan Reading beat Ricky Clark, and James Whitehead beat Dave Goodman in what was arguable the match of the round. Barry Frith beat Andy Vale. Mitch French, Mohammed Asra and Steve Abblett also won. Other than Bonser v Sewart, the match of the round would have to be Jan Reading v James Whitehead. The second round matches need to be played by Sunday 31st May 2009.
Mens Jubilee Invitation
Darren Peden and Craig Bentley won the invitation on Sunday 3rd May after shooting a Nett 65 to win the competition by 2 shots over Jay Smith and Mr Henfrey. Daz and Craig played very solid for the hole of the round, with Daz's recent shanking problems apearing to be behind him with none for the whole 18 holes. Ed Eley and Rafe Kennedy would have come third with their Nett 68 had they not taken the Gross Prize, which meant Prakash Magdani and Mr Patel took third place with the same score. It was a very nice day, with the weather doing everyone a favour and staying nice for most of the day. Dave Goodman won the longest drive on the 2nd hole for what must be the 100th time in Oadby Golf Club history, and Mark Allen won the nerest the pin on the 16th, with Mark being the first person to hit the green in the 5th group out. There was some comedy to report from the 16th green as Adam Jacques knocked his ball away and picked it up, leading to him and his partner, Karl Andrews, having to NR. They were not threatening the leaders at the time. Hopefully the club will see everybody back again next year.
Ladies Invitation
Briony Allen & Katie Holder won the Ladies Invitation on Sunday 3rd May after they shot a Nett 71. Katie plays at Cosby, and the junior girls won the competition by 6 shots. Shirley Hardy & June McNeelance were second with a Nett 77, while Kerry Coulter & Sonya Compton were third with their Nett 78. Briony has been playing well recently, with her handicap having come down a lot recently, and this victory topped off some of those performances. Briony also won the longest drive, and the nearest to the pin went to Kerry Coulter.
Scratch Team
The scratch team won their second match of the season on Thursday 7th May, making it two out of two. The team beat Ullesthorpe 5 1/2 - 2 1/2 at home. The team and order was completely unchanged, and once again the top half got the team off to a good start. Ben Hall won at 1 and Ed Eley won at 3, while Dale Baker got a great half at number 2. Birthday boy Adam Jacques also got a half at numer 4. In the back half Tidge Gharial and Dave Sewart won, while Dave Goodman halved and Rich Primrose lost. See the scratch team page for more of a report on the match.
Mens Municipal Cup
Oadby's mens team in the municipal cup could unfortunately not regain the trophy, and instead the trophy went to Humberstone for the first time since 1988. Oadby lost the trophy by three points. A more detailed report of events can be found in the mens municipal cup team section. Congratulations though to Lee Tebbutt and Paul Littlewood (Western Park, 39) and Andy Vale and Kev Wood (Humberstone, 33) who won the best pairs at their courses.
Mens Harold Creasey Memorial Trophy
Mick Tebbutt won the Harold Creasey Memorial Trophy when he beat 3 others on Count-Back. Mick got 37 points playing off 18, and beat Kev Wood, Andy Vale and Paul Hancock to win the trophy and take the prize money. Kev was 2nd on count-back and Andy Vale third. Andy keeps getting very close to winning, with a number of top three finishes recently. Surely it is only a matter of time before Vale wins a big tournament, maybe he is saving his best golf for Captains Day. Kev Wood regained some form to bet his winter league partner to second place, while Paul Hancock would have won the competition had he not been cut from the pro's competition the week before. He ended up fourth on count-back. He has now been cut again to 22. The standard of scractch went up to 72 for the day, with a number of bad scores cancelling out the four guys who got 37 points.
Mens County Foursomes
The mens county foursomes team won their first round match on Wednesday 14th May when they beat Melton Mowbray away. The first pairing was Tidge Gharial and Ben Hall, and they halved their match. Ed Eley and Dave Goodman were the second pair, and they won their match 3 UP, holding on after a fantastic comeback on the back 9 from the pair they played against. The next round sees Oadby with a home tie, with the date for the match Wednesday 10th June 2009. A more detailed report of the match can be found in the mens county foursomes team section.
Under 35's
Oadby Golf Club once again have an Under 35's team, and the team played their first match on Friday 15th May 2009. The team were at home to Melton Mowbray, and the team halved the match 2-2, which was a fantastic result given that none of the pairs had played foursomes with each other before, some hardly having played with each other. Ed Eley and Dale Baker went out first and won after being down with a few to play. The second par out were James Whitehead and Craig Seal, who unfortunately lost their match. Dave Goodman and Oli Fletcher-Warrignton were out third and they also lost. Ben Hall and Gianluca Napolitano went out last, and in a match that saw very few holes halved, Ben and Gianluca won the match 1 UP after their opponents missed a very short putt on the last hole. It was a fantatsic result for the team, and hopefully the rest of the season will take off from this first match.
Junior Stableford
Ian Timmins got 38 points in the juniors May stableford on Sunday 17th May to win the competition by a shot. Conditions were very tough, and Oli fletcher-Warrington came second with 37 points. Jake Hurst was third on 35, while Jake Ellson was fourth with 35. When you consider the conditions the scores were very good, and it is good to see that the juniors can play solid golf in very tough conditions.
Mens Paul Bottell Greensome
Ron Allen & Brian Origill won the Paul Bottell Greensome after they shot a Gross 81 - Nett 66. They won the competition by half a shot ahead of Tim Bingham and Ray Clark whose Nett 66.5 was not quite good enough. They're gross score was 87, as was the gross score for Paul Hillsdon and Tony Connor whos Nett 67 was good enough for third. There were a number of scores under par, which is quite good considering how awful the weather was for the whole weekend.
Scratch Team
The scratch team won their third match of the season on Thursday 21st May 2009 when they beat Forest Hills 4 1/2 - 3 1/2 at home. It was the third home match of the season, and although at times it looked like the team was struggling, they came through in the end to win. A big well done to Dale Baker who won his first match, a fantastic achievement for Dale, getting 1 1/2 points out of three matches going out at the tough number 2 position. Well done as well to James Whitehead and Gianluca Napolitano who played in their first matches, and although results did not go their way they did well. See the Scratch Team page for a more detailed match report.
Junior Medal
Lee Prendergast won the junior medal for May after a fantastic Gross 102 Nett 65. He has noe been cut to 35, while Danny Keogh has been cut to 33 after his Gross 101 Nett 67 came second. Sam Buckley was third also on Nett 67, and he has been cut to 30 after the Gross 98. Paul Abbott shot Gross 117 Nett 68 off his 49 handicap, and he has now been cut to 48. Jake Ellson and Ansy Keogh both shot Nett 71's while Oli Fletcher-Warrington and Jake Hurst shot Nett 72's, meaning none of the field were over their handicaps. Fantastic scores juniors, keep it up.
Mens Fullers London Pride
Steve Ablett won the Fullers London Pride, played over the 23rd and 24th May 2009 after his Gross 84 Nett 68 was good enough to win by one after Paul Hillsdon was unfortunately disqualified for playing the course on the Saturday and the competition on the Sunday (Rules 7.1b) A Simpsonwas 2nd with aGross 95 Nett 69, while there were 4 scores of Nett 70. Brian Stevenson, Paul Hancock, Mark Allenand Dave Goodman all shot Nett 70, while Dave Goodman got the lowest Gross.
Mixed County Foursomes
Unfortunately the team for the mixed county foursomes lost in the first round on Wednesday 27th May 2009. The team played away at Kirby Muxloe and came up against a strong Kirby Muxloe team, even though they didnt have their lowest handicappers present. The team got to the final last year which was a fantastic achievement for Oadby. Im sure the team will be looking to bounce back even stronger next year. See the mixed county foursomes page in the teams section for more information.
