Latest News From Month

Jubilee Invitation

The annual invitation was held on Sunday 2nd May and dispite the very tough conditions Tidge Gharial and Paul McReynolds managed to shoot a wonderful Nett 66 to win the competition and get their names up on the board. They shot a Gross 72 for their Nett 66, and the best Gross went to the team of Gary Tipler and Richard Primrose who shot a Gross 70. It was a fantastic knock by the pair and it could have been so much better had they holed a few missed short putts. Geoff Ferrer and John Plews were second with a Nett 67 while Roger Loach and former Oadby member Marc Palmer were third with a Nett 68. Tipler and Primrose also shot Nett 68 while there were Nett 69’s for the pairs of Ben Hall & Gary Tibbles, and Ed Eley & another former Oadby member Liam Morton. It was a good day apart from some bad weather and it was enjoyed by all. A big thanks goes out to all involved in helping make the day a good day, including all who helped to organise the competition and all who helped out putting up and running the half way tent. It should also be noted that the Sunday Lunch’s provided by Bar 19 were absolutely delicious and enjoyed very much by all. It is yet another meal this year that has been met with fantastic approval by the members, with the big credit going to Keith and Jane Day who have transformed the food supplied at Oadby Golf Club.

Harold Creasey Trophy

Kev Wood put in yet another good performance this year to win the Harold Creasey Trophy in very tough conditions on Saturday 8th May by 1 point. On a day where there was rain, wind and cold temperatures Kev came in with a very respectable and solid 39 points to win the competition by 1 point ahead of Ben Hall. It was Kev's second win of the year having won his first gold letter in the Lionel Vaughan with Andy Vale, and this win has seen him rise to third in the Order of Merit behind Tim Bingham (215 points) and Dave Sewart (206.23.) Kev currently has 190 points and is 5 clear of Martyn Morton. It is stillvery early days yet in the season but everybody in the top 10 will be pleased to get off to a good start and they will all look to be adding to their points tally in a few weeks once the singles competitions start again. Ben Hall was second in the Harold Creasey with 38 points despite missing a short put on the last for birdie which would have given him 15 points in the last 5 holes had he dropped. Ben has now been cut back to 5 while Kev has been cut to 10. Ben beat Ryan Archer on count-back to second place, with the ever solid Roger Loach 4th and Dave Sewart 5th (36 and 33 points respectively.) Werner Brach, Darren Peden, Andy Vale, Geoff Kiff and Ron Allen also finished with 33 points to complete the top 10 and take Order of Merit points.

Mens Municipal Cup

The Mens Municipal Cup was played on Sunday 9th May and unfortunately the Men could not win the cup back that was lost the previous year. On a day when the greens of all 3 courses seemed to be struggling for condition Western Park came through to win the trophy with 375 points. Oadby finished second on 370 points while Humberstone were a further 5 points back on 365. The scores were not brilliant by either course, but the end result was still very close. A big thank you goes out to the caterers of Bar 19 who once again put on a fantastic meal. The meal was enjoyed by everybody and Bar 19 have once again this year given everybody a fantastic meal. A greater detail match report and winners scores can be found on the Teams-Other OGC Teams-Mens Municipal Cup page.

Scratch Team

The Scratch Team had their second match of the season on Thursday 13th May and managed to come away from Beedles Lake with a 4 - 4 half, although the team are slightly disapointed not to come away with a win. There were wins for Lee Tebbutt (a big win against former county 1st teamer Richard Wells,) Ben Hall, Geoff Ferrer and Dave Sewart. The team now have two home matches in which they can hopefully recover some of the goal difference lost in the Ullesthorpe game, but it is certainly very nice to pick up a half away from home this early into the season. A full match report can be found in the Teams-Scratch Team-Match Reports 1-5 section of the website.

Mens Texas Scramble

The format for the Texas Scramble was changed this year due to the winning team being invited to play in the County Centenary Texas Scramble, and Scramble was changed to 4 man teams instead of 2 man. It was extremely close at the top but it was the 4 man team of Darren Peden, Roger Loach, Shayne Kenney and Danny Noton who edged out the other pairs. The team scored Gross 62 Nett 57 to win by 0.375 of a shot. In doing so the 4 win a £22 voucher each and it continues the good form recently shown by Peden and Loach. The second and third placed teams both had a Nett 57.375, with the team of Tidge Gharial, Lee Tebbutt, Dave Goodman & Geoff Ferrer edging out the team of Asra, Alan Ball, Tony Greaves and Malcolm Pratt to win a £10 voucher each. Gharial’s team shot a Gross 60 while Asra’s team shot a Gross 67. The winners now go on to play in the final at Lutterworth, although the second placed team might also get in depending on entries.

Ladies County Foursomes

The ladies were handed a tough draw in the first round of the County Foursomes with a trip to Kibworth. Despite the tough draw the ladies put in a fantastic performance but unfortunately came up just short, losing 1 Down in the end. Briony Allen and Bev Dodds lost 1 Down, and Cathy Smith and Kerry Coulter halved, with their opponents holing a 3 foot putt on the last to win the match. A full match report can be found in the Teams-Other OGC Teams-Ladies County Foursomes page.

Mens County Foursomes

The Mens County Foursomes team unfortunately lost to Whetstone on Wednesday 19th May 5 Down, after the team of Lee Tebbutt & Geoff Ferrar lost 2 Down, and Ben Hall & Ed Eley lost 3 Down. Both pairs played some very solid golf but at the end of the day it would appear to have been putting which cost both pairs. A big thank you goes out to everyone who came to support the team, and a full match report can be found in the Teams-Other OGC Teams-Mens County Foursomes page.

Paul Bottell Greensome

The Paul Bottell Greensome was played over the weekend of Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd May and it was a fantastic weekend in terms of weather. Players would have no weather excuses for not shooting good scores, and in the end it was Lee Tebbutt and Dave Goodman who came out victorious with a Gross 68 Nett 64 to win the trophy and the £32 voucher each for the first prize. Dave and Lee played some very solid golf on their way to victory, with Lee in particular holing some solid putts and hitting the ball in a way that sees him returning to good form. The pair who came second were actually Lee's Dad Mick Tebbutt and Ron Allen, with a Gross 84 Nett 66.5, winning them an £18 voucher each. Prakash Magdani and Raj Pattini were third with a Gross 82 Nett 66.5 to win the £12 voucher each, beating Ben Hall and Ed Eley on count-back after they had shot a Gross 71.

Scratch Team

The Scratch Team won their first match of the season on Thursday 27th May when they beat Charnwood Forest at home. It was Oadby’s first home match of the season and when put with the half a point picked up away at Beedles Lake the first three matches of the season have gone well for the team so far. There were wins in the match for Ed Eley, Ben Hall, Dave Goodman, Tidge Gharial, Dave Sewart and Geoff Ferrar, who has now won all three of his matches so far this season. The final result was 6 – 2 to Oadby and a big thank you goes out to all those who came out to support the team. A full match report can be found in the Teams-Scratch Team-Match Reports 1-5 page, but you must be a logged in member of the website to view this page. Hall of Fame Qualifier

Geoff Kiff won the Hall of Fame qualifier over the weekend of Sat 29th & Sun 30th May when he shot 41 points in very tough conditions. Conditions were very tricky on the Saturday with strong winds and lots of rain, and despite the fact the rain held off on Sunday the wind was much stronger than it was on the Saturday, meaning any score of 36 points or better was very good throughout the course of the whole weekend. Geoff has been cut down to 19.4 as a result of this competition and has moved up a large number of places in the Order of Merit as a result. Geoff won the competition by 2 shots, beating Ed Eley into second place after a very respectable 39 points. Ed has been cut back down to 3 and he finished the competition 2 shots clear of third place. Brian Orgill was third on count-back ahead of Roger Loach and Tim Bingham. There were then 8 people who shot 36 points, with the 8 players finishing in the following order: Nick McCaffrey (cut to 26,) Richard Bonser, Kev Wood, Ryan Archer, Alan Hutchby (cut to 13,) Derek Archer, Steve Buckley and Brian Stevenson.

Mens Order of Merit

Tim Bingham still sits on the top of the Order of Merit as we enter June with a very solid 245 points. Tim has been putting together very solid performances all year and he sits clear of Dave Sewart in second place (206.23.) Kev Wood is third on 193.50 while Martyn Morton is fourth on 185 points, although Martyn has missed the last few competitions as he has been away. He will be hoping to continue his before holiday form now he has returned. Roger Loach is fifth on 169.92, 3.09 points clear of Ed Eley (166.83.) The next 3 are all very close together, with Jan Reading seventh (140.83,) Ben Hall eighth (139.25,) and Darren Peden ninth on 138.67. Ron Allen completes the top ten with 117.83.
