Mens County Foursomes Team 2010

The Mens County Foursomes team is played by all all the clubs within the county. All the clubs are thrown into a hat and the draw is then completed. Each club picks four players to represent them, and the four players then split into two pairs. Each pair then play foursomes against the pairs from the other clubs. Each of the two matches are played to the end of the final hole. Even if a pair is 5 UP with 4 to play, the match carries on being played until the end. At the end of both the matches, the winning team is the team with the larger victory. this means if team A wins 6 UP in one match and lose 4 DN in the other, they go through to the next round via a 2 UP victory. If the final score is all square, both pairs play a sudden-death. The sudden-death consists of 3 hole each pair, and then once again the scores are added up. If the scores are still the same the next 3 holes are played, and so on. The matches are not played of Scratch, there are shots given which are given out by halving the combined handicap difference. If team A play of 2 and 5, and team B play off 4 and 7, team B would get 2 shots. The matches are to be played on set days as stated by the Leicestershire & Rutland Golf Union.

Date Opponents Home/Away Result
Wednesday 19th May Whetstone Home Lost 5 Down

The men played their first round of the 2010 County Foursomes on Wednesday 19th May away to Whetstone, but unfortunately for the team it also proved to be their last. With Dave Goodman and Tidge Gharial unavailable the team consisted of Lee Tebbutt, Ed Eley, Ben Hall & Geoff Ferrar, with Lee & Geoff the first pair out. The pair gained 4 shots in the match and certainly made the most of their shot holes, although in the end there proved to be too many birdies from the solid pair of David Cooper and Shaun Corby, with the Whetstone pair winning the match 2 UP. Lee and Geoff played some solid golf at times but at the end of the day it was the putting which proved to be the vital aspect of the game, as it can so often be in golf. The other match saw no shots, with Ben Hall & Ed Eley playing off the same handicaps. This was going to be a tight match and there was some very good golf played by Hall & Eley, until the putters came out. Hall will be the first to admit that he had a very poor day with the putter which cost the pair after some fantastic driving by both players. There were too many short putts missed and too many bad long putts, which when put with the very solid putting of Ian Hurst of Whetstone was always a recipe for a loss. Hall & Eley lost their match 3 Down, leaving the final score at 5 UP to Whetstone. Oadby will feel that had they putted better it could have been a different story, but credit must go to all 4 of the Whetstone players who played very solid golf and on the day deserved to win the match. Good luck to Whetstone in the next round. A big thank you goes out to Gary & Cathy Smith, Club Captain John Goodman, Vice-Captain Dave Goodman and Club President Dave Leet who all came out to support the team. Your support was greatly appreciated.
