Winter League Report After 4 Matches

The winter league is now well and truly under way, and after 4 matches both the Saturday and the Sunday leagues are shaping up to be very exciting. In the Saturday league there has been some fantastic golf played, with 2 teams having won all their matches. Jan Reading & Adam Jacques have played 4 won 4, giving them 12 points, while Tige Gharial & Rich Bonser have played 3 won 3, having already had their week off. These pairs have played some fantastic golf, with Adam shooting 67 in one of the matches, and Tidge shooting 66 in another match. These two teams play each other in the last match, so that match could determine who goes through, although if both teams keep winning, that match could determine who goes through as group winners. Gharial and Bonser are joint second with 2 other teams. Pat Murphy Champion Asra & Malcom Pratt, and Steve Ablett & Tim Bingham have both won 3 and lost 1 of their first 4 games, with Ablett & Bingham only losing to Jacques and Reading. There are then 3 teams on 6 points, with last years runners-up Andy Vale & Kev Wood having already played 3 tough games on their way to 2 wins out of 4. Alan Ball & Tony Graves also have 2 out of 4, as do C Hackworth & John Bartrum, who after losing their first 2 matches have hit back to win their last 2. In the Sunday league, defending champions Ben Hall & Ed Eley have started strongly, winning 4 out of 4 to sit at the top of the group on 12 points. There are currently 4 teams in second place, all with 2 wins. Dave Sewart & Martin Morton, and Neil Measey & Barry Frith have both won 2 out of 3 matches, while Ray Clark & Prakash Magdani and Mick Geddes and Order of Merit leader Scott Merrell have both won 2 out of 4 matches. Richard Primrose and Paul Hancock have a win and a half out of three matches, with their only loss coming against Hall & Eley when Primrose had to play the match on his own, and Eley decided it would be a good day to not have many putts. He had 11 through the first 10 holes which included an Eagle on the third when he holed a bunker shot. Both leagues are shaping up to be very exciting, and with no matches easy, you are not through until it is mathmatically possible. Any one of the 23 teams could produce a fantastic round, and on their day, any one of those teams could beat any other team. The next full report will be no later than after the matches played on the 19th & 20th December, although the league tables will be updates on the website after every match.
Archive Information
As the season is now over, with the exception of the fur & feather and the conclusion of the Order of Merit, all information for 2009 has now been archived, with the exception of some pages. If you go into the Archive Page and then click the link for 2009, you will see a page which contains a number of buttons. Each of these buttons will contain information relating to 2009, and a number of these pages will have further links. All of the full results for the mens and the juniors are still on the site in their respective pages within the archive section, as are all the competition winners. The team results page do not contain many results, with the exception of the scratch team. The scratch team page will contain all of the player results and match reports. The club news pages are also archived, and when the fixture book is released the club news pages accessed from the menu at the top will be updated. November and December 2009 are still accessed from the top menu. The fixtures will not be archived, except for the fixture book, and the reason for that is that the new years fixtures will be added to the same calenders, which are found in the fixtures pages from the top menu. If anybody cannot find any information from last year that you are looking for, please dont hesitate to send an e-mail through the 'Contact Us' page so the problem can be sorted out.
Fur & Feather & Order of Merit Conclusion
Scott Merell went into the Fur & Fether knowing that he only had to beat Steve Ablett to win the Order of Merit. Scott got 40 points to not only win the Order of Merit, but to also win the division 1 prize for the Fur & Feather. Next years Vice Club Captain Dave Goodman got a very solid 37 points in his first round for about a month. It was the first time he had played Oadby since his very memorable hole in one on the 3rd. Dave finished second on count-back, and it was Ben Hall who was third. Ben finished 7th in the Order of Merit, finishing just behind Tim Bingham, but Ben very nearly caught Tim in the end. Ben finished third also on count-back, beating Ed Eley, Dave Sewart and Rob May on the local rule. Ed has finished third in the Order of Merit this year, which is not a bad finish to add to his very big win in its first appearance last year. Ed was chasing the top spot all the way through the year, and got very close in the end, with Steve and Scott just pipping him. Steve Ablett could only manage 35 points in the final competition of the year to just miss out on the trophy. Steve has had a fantastic year, losing a number of shots and playing very consistent golf. There have not been many bad rounds for Steve this year, with him very rarely dropping below 33 points. Steve has been up there in every competition throughout the year, but unfortunately ends the year without the Order of Merit and without a gold letter, but had it no been for the late charge from Merrell, it might have been a different story. The charge from Merrell included some quality golf, including a run of 74 holes without a 6 on his card, and 85 holes without a double bogey in the run up to the conclusion of the Order of Merit. This is extremely solid and consistent golf, and it is form like this which is required to win a competition like the Order of Merit. Scott has now been cut down to 8, and he will be hoping to try to recover some of this form in the winter league to push for promotion from the group stage. Alan Ball also shot 40 points to win division 2 and almost get himself cut down to 15. M Page was second after shooting a solid 39 points, while Neil Measey was third with 38 points. There were then 6 people with scores of 35, who included Rich Bonser, Mick Tebbutt, Darren Read, Mel Orgill, Ron Allen & Tim Rushin. In division 3 it was Rob Lovell who who took the title, shooting 37 points to beat Taff Mayes by 1 shot. M Boot was third on 35, whil Joe Larkey and Doug Hewitt were 4th and 5th respecitively with 34 and 33. Back to the Order of Merit to complete the top 10, and Paul Hancock was 4th with Andy Vale 5th. Andy Vale has had another very solid year, and next year could be his year to take the title. Jan Reading was 8th, while Roger Loach was 9th with Adam Jacques 10th.
