Pairs Summer 9 Hole Matchplay Competition 2010
The closing and key dates for 2010 will be added to the website as soon as they are announced. There is full information on the pairs 9 hole summer league below, and with 2009 being a success, hopefully we will see more new pairs in the league for 2010.
This page relates to the new summer pairs 9 hole matchplay competition that has been approved by the committee. The buttons at the top of this page are links to the standing orders for the competition (full list of rules), the competition dates for the year 2009, and step-by-step instructions of how to play a match and work out shots. The other buttons above are links to the card that should be used for the shots and the results of the league as the league progresses, so people can see how the league is going throughout the year. The league table will be updates on a regular basis, and as you will also see there are two pages to the standing order, and there is one button link below for each page.
The competition is to be played over 9 holes (holes 1-7 then 17 and 18) and you can pick your own partner out of any section of the club. The handicap limit is 28 for men, 36 for ladies and juniors can play off their club handicaps. Any member of the club can enter the competition with any other member, there are no limits in that sense. Men and juniors are to play off the yellow tees, ladies are to play of the red tees. When it comes to the matches, the lowest handicapper out of the fourball will give shots to the other 3 players. Each player will first of all work out the difference in the handicaps. You will then take 3/4 of this difference and halve that number. You will then round that number to the nearest hole number, which will be the amount of shots you recieve. It is halved due to the fact you are only playing 9 holes. You will then use the stroke indexes from the 9 hole scorcard to work out where you get your shots. An example would be to say the lowest member of a group is a 5 handicapper. There is a 26 handicapper in the group. 26-5=21. 3/4 of 21 is 15.75. 15.75/2=7.875, which when rounded up gives 8. The 26 handicapper would get 8 shots over the 9 holes, one shot on stroke indexes 1 to 8. There will be a 9 hole card provided.
The matches are all to be played right until the end of the final hole. Even if you get to 5 Up after 5, you still play right to the end. If you win the match you will get three points, and the loser 0. If the match is halved both teams will get 1 and a 1/2 points. There is also a bonus point system in place, which will encourage you to keep playing to the end of the last hole. If you win the match by 4 Up or more, you get a bonus 1/2 point. If you lose the match 2 Down or less you get a bonus 1/2 point. This means if you are 5 Down after 5, you have lost the match, but winning 3 out of the last 4 holes will mean you get 1/2 a bonus point. If you win 4 Up you will get 3 and a 1/2 points, whereas winning 1 Up, 2 Up or 3 Up will only give you 3 points. At the end of the match you must record the score on the sheet which is to be printed on the notice board. You must record the result whether you win, lose or halve. The result will be recorded the same way as for the winter league, going accross the table. All results must be filled in by at least on team. If it is only in one row that is fine, but as long as the result is in one of the two correct places on the board that will be fine. Any results that are not entered on the board by the closing date will not count, regardless of whether or not they have been played.
Depending on entries there will either be one or two leagues. If there are to be two leagues there will be a draw to determine which teams are in each league. Regardless of whether there are one or two leagues there will also be semi-finals and a final. If there is one league the top four teams will have their names thrown into a hat, and be drawn out that way. If there are two leagues, there will be two hats, one for league one and one for league two. One name will be picked out of each hat so that you do not play the team from the same league again until the final. The draw will not be seeded, purely drawn.
If you wish to enter please put your names down in the red folder situated in the members end of the clubhouse. The entry fee is £5 per pair. Please put this payment into one of the brown envelopes provided and post it either into the box in the clubhouse or through the letterbox into the secretary's office. Please pay for the competition when you put your names down. You must have paid by Sunday 17th May to be entered into the league(s).
If you have any questions or comments about the league please either contact me through the contact page or speak to myself at the club at any time. I will happily answer any questions you may have.

Additional Information
As mentioned there is a 9 hole card that has been produced specifically for this competition. This can be found by clicking on the link at the top of this page, and the card will also be printed out and made available in the clubhouse. All matches must be played to the stroke indexes from this card, with different stroke indexes for men and ladies. The men are to play off the mens stroke indexes and the ladies off the ladies. The competition must be paid for before a team plays a match. If a team plays a match before they pay, that match will be deemed to have been lost 9 Down, and the other team will get all the points. If you have not payed by the closing date please pay as soon as possible, and please pay before you play your first match else points will be lost. At least one contact phone number should be entered onto the sheet that will be posted on the notice board. If there are any queries please feel free to contact me.
